As a wedding photographer, one of the most common questions I get from couples is: “Should we do a first look?” The truth is, there’s no right or wrong answer. Some couples can’t imagine not seeing each other before the ceremony. Others dream of that classic moment walking down the aisle. So today, I’m sharing 5 reasons you might love doing a first look, along with 2 valid reasons why skipping it could be right for you. Hopefully, this helps you make a decision that feels true to your day.

💍 What is a First Look?

A first look is a private moment where the couple sees each other for the first time before the ceremony. Usually, it’s just the two of you (and your photographer hiding quietly nearby with a camera in hand 😉).

✅ 5 Reasons to Do a First Look

1. You’ll Have a Private, Emotional Moment Without 100 Eyes on You

A first look gives you the chance to react naturally and soak in the moment together, away from the crowd. If you're someone who values intimacy or feels anxious about emotional moments in front of others, this can be incredibly grounding.

2. It Eases Pre-Ceremony Nerves

So many couples say the nerves melt away the moment they see each other. Instead of spending the whole ceremony trying not to cry (or faint), you’ll feel more present, connected, and calm.

3. More Time for Couple Portraits (and Better Light)

Doing a first look gives us more time for dreamy, romantic portraits before the ceremony when light tends to be softer and more flattering. It also means less rush later in the day.

4. You Can Enjoy More of Your Cocktail Hour

When we knock out portraits early, you won’t have to miss cocktail hour or your signature drink and all those hors d’oeuvres you carefully picked.

5. It Creates One of the Most Memorable Moments of the Day

I’ve photographed dozens of first looks, and every one feels special. Whether you laugh, cry, or both, it’s a moment you’ll truly remember. I’ll be there to capture it quietly, just as it unfolds.

❌ 2 Reasons to Skip the First Look

1. You’ve Always Dreamed of That Aisle Moment

If you’ve pictured that moment — the doors opening, eyes meeting, guests standing — and it’s the one thing you’ve always wanted, then stick with it! That walk down the aisle is just as emotional (and just as photographable).

2. Your Timeline Works Without It

If your ceremony is early and your venue has great lighting all day, we can still create a beautiful timeline without a first look. You’ll just want to plan enough time after the ceremony for couple portraits, wedding party, and family photos.

💡 Final Thoughts from a Photographer

At the end of the day, it’s your story and it should feel right to you. Whether you choose a first look or not, my job is to make the moment feel natural, unhurried, and true to your relationship. I’ll quietly document it as it unfolds, so you can relive the emotions every time you flip through your gallery.

The Importance of Authentic Moments

In the world of wedding photography, capturing authentic moments is essential. Each glance, laugh, and tear tells a story. I believe that these genuine interactions are what make your wedding day truly special.

Why Authenticity Matters

Authenticity in photography goes beyond just taking pretty pictures. It’s about capturing the essence of your love story. When you look back at your photos, I want you to feel the emotions you experienced on that day. It’s those candid moments that will resonate with you for years to come.

Tips for Capturing Authentic Moments

  1. Be Yourself: Don’t try to pose or act a certain way. Just be you! Your natural interactions will shine through in the photos.

  2. Focus on Each Other: During your first look or any moment, focus on each other. Forget about the camera and enjoy your time together.

  3. Trust Your Photographer: I’m here to guide you, but I also want to capture those unscripted moments. Trust that I’ll be there to document everything as it happens.

Conclusion

Choosing whether to have a first look is a personal decision. Whatever you decide, remember that the day is about you and your love. Embrace the emotions, enjoy the moments, and let me capture your story in a way that feels true to you.

I can’t wait to be part of your journey and help you create timeless memories that reflect your unique love story.
